Ponhofi Annual Schools Tournament Draws Regional Competitors

Situated less than ten kilometers from the Namibia-Angola border, Ponhofi Senior Secondary School played host to over 30 schools from different central-northern regions on 12-13th April.

These schools came together for the annual Ponhofi Schools Tournament, which aims to foster a positive sporting environment and encourage fitness and teamwork among schools and regions.

Four sport - football, netball, basketball, and volleyball - were contested simultaneously at various courts and fields.

Vandalism, theft of water borehole equipment leave communities without water

Vandalism and theft of water borehole equipment such as cylinders and solar panels are rampant in the Ohangwena Region.

This has left some communities without water during this critical time when it is needed most.

During the recent handover of deep boreholes to the community by the Office of the Prime Minister in the Ohangwena Region, the governor expressed disappointment with the irresponsible acts by criminals who are depriving the community of this scarce resource.

Linda Shihepo, freedom fighter, laid to rest at Eenhana Memorial Shrine

Freedom fighter Linda Shihepo was buried at the Eenhana Memorial Shrine in the Ohangwena Region.

The late Shihepo (99), who died on the 8th of last month, was conferred an official funeral.

Her role in the liberation struggle started in the 1960s, when her home accommodated Swapo PLAN fighters.

During her memorial service at Omundundu Village, speaker after speaker reflected on her life journey as someone who stood against oppression and injustice.

Ohangwena battles Malaria outbreak

The Ohangwena Region has recorded a total of 392 cases of malaria.

Of these, 154 cases have been acquired locally in Ohangwena, while 238 originated elsewhere.

Ohangwena cases started to peak during the second week of January, whereby Eenhana recorded 107 cases, followed by Engela with 71 cases and Okongo with 47 cases.

The local cases recorded in Eenhana are 69, followed by Okongo with 60 cases and 25 cases recorded in Engela. 

Onghala residents hope for a bumper harvest

Residents of Onghala village in the Ohangwena Region are hoping for a bumper harvest this year, despite being impacted by flood waters from Angola. 

Many residents did not reap any fruit last year, especially those who settled in flood-prone areas. 

It's headman, Paulus Friedrick, shared the challenges faced by the community, stating that last year was a difficult time for them as they heavily rely on subsistence farming.

Road users embrace Mobile Testing Vehicle

The Roads Authority's Transportation Executive Officer, Sydney Boois, says he is happy that road users are utilising the services of the Mobile Vehicle Testing Station.

The testing station is used by the Roads Authority's Traffic Law Enforcement Team during the festive season and beyond. 

It will be stationed at the Oshikoto roadblock until Friday before being moved to the Ohangwena Region on Saturday. 

Campaign against drug use in Ohangwena

In the ongoing battle against drug abuse, the Ohangwena Region is taking a firm stance, with the police having confiscated drugs worth N$1.7 million this year. 

This was revealed during an anti-drug awareness campaign organised by the non-profit organisation Fighting Against Drug Use in Villages in Ongenga.

The eighth edition of the anti-drug campaign, which was well attended, highlights the community's eagerness to fight drug abuse. 

National Assembly outreach program in Ohangwena

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Loide Kasingo, led a delegation in an outreach programme to the Ohangwena Region, advocating the concept of "Taking Parliament closer to the people."

During the visit, the delegation demonstrated the legislative functions in relation to the Organs of State, with a focus on legislation, oversight, and representation.

During the engagement, community members were given the opportunity to comment, ask questions, and share challenges in their constituencies.

Endola SME and Youth Expo kicks off this week

The Endola Annual SME and Youth Expo in the Ohangwena Region is set to start this Thursday until Sunday at Endola.

The expo aims to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to display and market their goods and services.

The organiser of the Endola Annual SME and Youth Expo, Miryam Haipinge, says that the expo is crucial for small businesses in terms of networking and growth and to uplift economic activities in rural areas, where they are currently low.
