The Eenhana Town Council commemorated Arbor Day by highlighting the importance of environmental cleanliness and protection.
The day was marked under the theme "Plant Today, Clean Today, Sustain Tomorrow."
The celebration went beyond the traditional act of planting trees, as council officials, community members, and stakeholders joined hands in a town-wide clean-up campaign aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
Speaking during the event, the manager for Environmental Health and Community Services, Victoria Haindobo, emphasised that environmental cleanliness is the foundation of a healthy and sustainable community.
"We initiate this event to ensure that we promote environmental protection and also to ensure that the community is responsible for keeping the environment clean as well as ensure that the environment that we are living in, Eenhana, is greener."
The campaign was joined by the governor of the Ohangwena Region and the mayor of Eenhana, who participated in cleaning activities alongside community members.
According to Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa, combining a clean-up campaign with Arbor Day activities helps create a safer ecosystem while encouraging residents to take responsibility for protecting their environment.
"It starts with taking that responsibility and saying, 'Whatever that is, I am having that; it is rubbish and can be recycled. I must actually put it in the right bins.' That is the very first thing, so having the consciousness of what it is that you are doing and preserving your environment, because a cleanup campaign like today is a reaction to an action that has been committed before."
The town mayor said they chose to mark Arbor Day with a comprehensive clean-up campaign initiative to reinforce the message that environmental conservation is not only about planting trees but also about maintaining clean surroundings.
