A sombre atmosphere engulfed the Pohamba homestead at Ohangwena Region's Okanghudi Village as former President Hifikepunye Pohamba returned home on Sunday following the death of his wife, former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba, last week.

Family members, neighbours and well-wishers gathered to welcome the former President upon his return from Windhoek.

His arrival was marked by scenes of grief as mourners and community members gathered at the homestead to receive him in accordance with local tradition.

The emotional homecoming brought together family and friends, who shared in the family's grief.

Ohangwena Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa, who accompanied the former president's delegation from Windhoek, briefed the gathering.

"We have been in Windhoek, and many people came to comfort the whole family throughout the week since our loved one passed away. We held a memorial service in Windhoek, where many people came to comfort us."

Hamutumwa, who is also a close family member, informed the mourners that the body of the late former First Lady is expected to arrive in the region during the week, ahead of a memorial service scheduled for Friday.

Retired Reverend Ifeta Nghiwilepo offered words of comfort.

"Please be comforted in the name of God, and ask Jesus, the living Saviour, to give you strength and comfort during this difficult time."
