Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi says bus operators play a critical role in Namibian society, contributing to job creation and the country's economic growth.
He made these remarks during an information-sharing session with bus operators at Helao Nafidi in the Ohangwena Region, where he urged bus drivers and other road users to respect and adhere to road safety measures.
Nekundi said the role of bus operators in safely transporting passengers to various destinations is valued and recognised, emphasising the need to professionalise the public transport industry.
He urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and overtaking at blind spots, warning that such reckless practices put passengers and other road users at risk.
The minister also cautioned against the unsafe loading and offloading of passengers on public roads, stressing the importance of responsible driving and compliance with road safety regulations.
"We need to have that understanding that, with your utmost experience, we need to do that. And if there are challenges, we must collectively find solutions to the issues affecting you. You are not mere operators. You play a critical role in Namibian society and in the economic development of our country. You must know that we appreciate you as leaders. You, too, must appreciate yourselves." "
Nekundi's call comes amid growing efforts to promote professionalism and accountability in the transport sector to improve passenger safety and reduce road accidents.
He also highlighted three proposed bills aimed at improving road safety in Namibia, including the Road Bill and the Road Safety Management Bill.
The minister further stressed the need for all drivers involved in commercial transport to undergo defensive driving training to enhance their driving skills, encourage responsible behaviour on the roads and minimise accidents.
Meanwhile, Helao Nafidi Town Mayor Dalius Shaalukeni called on bus drivers, particularly those operating long-distance routes, to prioritise passenger safety and exercise greater responsibility on the roads.
He warned drivers that the lives of the passengers they transport are in their hands.
Shaalukeni stressed that drivers must put the well-being of their passengers first by avoiding reckless driving and adhering to road safety practices to reduce accidents, injuries and loss of life on public roads.
"Public transport plays a vital role in the socioeconomic development of our people, the entire country and, more specifically, our town. It connects people to employment opportunities, educational institutions, health facilities, markets, businesses and families. For many Namibians, buses are not merely a means of transport; they are an essential service that enables people to participate in economic and social activities."
