Namibia is hosting the 19th Interest 2025 Conference, which is Africa's leading scientific gathering on HIV treatment, prevention and research.

The conference that was originally scheduled for 2020 is now taking place in Windhoek after being held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Executive Director of Tonata People Living with HIV, Victoria Kamule, shared a message, reflecting on her 30-year journey of having the virus.

She reminded delegates that while the world continues to search for scientific answers, people with HIV remain the living experience of the virus.

The Deputy Executive Director for Regional Health and Social Welfare Services, Taimi Amaambo, who represented the Health Minister, emphasised that the fight against HIV and other diseases must go hand in hand with advancing HIV treatment and building a resilient health system.

She stressed the importance of partnerships and collective responsibility in sustaining health gains and improving access to care.

"Today demonstrates the commitment to advancing scientific research and promoting equitable access to HIV prevention and treatment initiatives."

Representing the Prime Minister was Penda Iithindi, the Executive Director in the Ministry, who said Namibia celebrated its recognition of the Bronze Tier Award, acknowledging the country's achievement of reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV to below five per cent in 2022.

He emphasised that the fight against HIV is not a destination but a continuing journey, one that demonstrates Namibia's commitment to advancing scientific research and promoting equitable access to HIV prevention and treatment initiatives.

His message further reaffirmed Namibia's collective commitment to addressing HIV with the innovation, necessary research, and equity it demands.

The week-long conference also highlights the importance of uniting researchers, technicians and policymakers across borders to tackle shared challenges with bold, evidence-based solutions and to support the next generation of African researchers.

"Let us leave this gathering not only informed but inspired to drive forward a vision of an HIV-free generation, built on innovation, built on research, and built on partnership, justice and inclusion. The government of the Republic of Namibia remains resolute in its commitment to delivering quality, affordable and accessible health care for all of our people/citizens. We continue to integrate HIV services within a broader health system framework, one that addresses compatibilities, mental health, maternal and child health and all the social determinants of health."

The Interest Conference continues throughout the week, bringing together researchers, health leaders and experts from across Africa and beyond.
