The family of the late Eliud 'Shilongo' Hamukwa intensified their call for justice after the truck driver, reportedly shot and killed at the Onhuno roadblock last Sunday by an on-duty officer during an argument, was buried.

Mourners converged on the deceased's homestead in Omungwelume in the Ohangwena Region on Sunday to bid their farewells.

Speaking on behalf of the late 38-year-old Hamukwa's family was Oom Kamati, who called on investigating officers to ensure they act fairly in probing the actions of their colleague and not to be prejudiced during the process.

"If they happen to tamper with the process to cover somebody, the life of Shilongo will never rest in peace."

Hamukwa's son was at a loss for words.

"God, there is my father. I will find him one day when my own death comes knocking at my door. I am hurt."

A preliminary police report stated that the late Hamukwa, also known as Shilongo, got into an altercation with an officer after the truck he was driving was stopped and the two occupants were told they held insufficient documentation.

Hamukwa ultimately, police say, got into the truck and charged it forward in the direction of a female officer manning the checkpoint, resulting in another male officer pulling out his firearm and shooting at the truck.

One bullet struck the trucker in the stomach, killing him instantly.

43-year-old Police Sergeant Dimbulukeveni Namhila was denied bail in the Ohangwena Magistrates' Court, with the case postponed to 3 June for a formal bail application.
