The neutrality of expert witness Jonathan Katjimune has come under scrutiny in the ongoing legal dispute over the Ovaherero Paramount Chieftaincy, currently before the Windhoek High Court.

Katjimune, who testified against the recognition of Professor Mutjinde Katjiua as Paramount Chief, said Katjiua's chieftaincy did not follow established Ovaherero customary procedures when he ascended to the role in March 2022.

Katjiua's appointment, which was officiated by a faction within the Ovaherero community, has been a subject of controversy.

During the cross-examination, Advocate Reinhard Tötemeyer, representing Katjiua, questioned the impartiality of Katjimune, describing him as a supporter of the Vipuira Kapuuo faction.

Tötemeyer argued that this alignment undermines Katjimune's credibility as a neutral cultural expert.

Tötemeyer also criticized the substance of Katjimune's testimony, saying that it lacked historical and documentary support.

Katjimune, who was called to testify as an Ovaherero cultural expert and high priest, maintained that his position was rooted in tradition rather than political allegiance.

He argued that Katjiua bypassed customary laws by unilaterally calling a Chiefs' Council meeting, which ultimately led to his own appointment.

According to Katjimune, the authority to convene such a meeting rests with the chairperson of the Chiefs' Council, especially in the absence of a sitting paramount chief.

Court will resume tomorrow at 9:00.
