The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has instructed employees at the Rundu government garage to get their house in order.

Nekundi visited the government garage and spoke to some service providers over the weekend.

During the visit, the minister discovered that some service providers are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars, with some debts dating back as far as three years. They have also been providing services without an order.

In addition, the minister instructed the staff to dispose of the numerous broken cars located in the yard. Nekundi says the policy mandates that cars that have reached 120,000 kilometres or those that are more than five years old should be auctioned off.

He says some of the cars have reached 500,000 kilometres, are more than 20 years old, and cost the government a lot of money to repair.

Other concerns are unfilled vacancies and the state of the garage in general.

Nekundi says all invoices must be paid in 30 days, vacancies must be filled, and the garage must look presentable. The minister will be visiting other government garages throughout the country.
