The Namibian Police have recorded 3,203 cases involving firearms between 2021 and 2024.

This was revealed at the launch of the Amnesty on Arms, Ammunition and Armament campaign in Windhoek on Friday.

According to the police's national crime statistics involving firearms from 2021 to 2024, 165 cases of murder were recorded, along with 1,488 cases of robbery, 1,012 cases of pointing firearms at a person, and 538 cases of attempted murder with firearms.

The amnesty period will run for one month, from September 1st to September 30th, during which people who surrender their illegal firearms, ammunition, and armaments will not be subjected to disclosure, humiliation, arrest, or persecution.

During the 2024 amnesty period, 187 firearms were surrendered, along with 4,443 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, three air guns and 14 magazines were handed over to the police countrywide.
