Ghana's President, John Mahama, has removed the country's Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.

President Mahama made the decision to remove Torkonoo after receiving a report from the committee constituted in line with provisions of Ghana's Constitution to look into concerns by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori.

In his petition to President Mahama in April, Ofori accused the Chief Justice of abuse of authority, incompetence, misappropriation of public funds, and unconstitutional interference with judicial proceedings and appointments, among other claims listed under thematic areas.

A statement issued by the Ghanaian Presidency said, "After considering the petition and the evidence, the Committee found that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established and recommended her removal from office."

Chief Justice Torkonoo has since denied any wrongdoing, according to the local media reports.
