The Senior Command and Staff Course hosted African Heritage Day at the Namibia Command and Staff College in Okahandja over the weekend.

This marks the second commemoration of the day in the military-academic programme's course calendar.

The Namibia Command and Staff College has now fully integrated the African Heritage Day into its Senior Command and Staff Course.

The Senior Command and Staff Course is a military-academic programme designed to train Namibian Defence Force senior officers in staff appointments and regimental duties.

Integrated with the Combined Joint African Exercise, codenamed CJAX, the event highlighted the rich and diverse traditions found across the African continent.

Brigadier General Bernard Erastus, Commandant of the Namibia Command and Staff College, underscored the significance of the military's role in organising and hosting Heritage Day as a holistic approach to defending sovereignty while preserving people's dignity and their right to peace, culture, and self-determination.

"As military officers, we are not only custodians of national sovereignty but also agents of our collective identity. Our uniform represents the courage of our ancestors who fought for freedom, the unity of our diverse communities, and the commitment to build a peaceful and prosperous Africa."

Gracing the occasion was the Director of the National Heritage Council of Namibia, Erica Ndalikokule.

Ndalikokule applauded the college for taking the initiative to profile heritage in its academic programmes.

She noted that the displays reflected military excellence in upholding cultural norms and standards deeply rooted in Africa's shared values.

"I commend you for your passion and commitment to preserving and showcasing your intangible cultural heritage. Whether through music, dance, storytelling, traditional attire, or practices passed down through generations, your efforts ensure that these traditions remain alive, relevant, and celebrated."

Locals and students, including those from friendly forces in Botswana, Kenya, and Zambia, proudly presented their traditional crafts, attire, cuisine, and customs, creating a dynamic environment of cultural exchange, learning, and unity.
