Walvis Bay Rural constituency councillor Florian Donatus has been charged with fraud and money laundering.

According to a police report, the Independent Patriots for Change councillor was arrested on Monday and will appear in the Swakopmund Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

The councillor is accused of unauthorised spending of N$116,000 from the Erongo Regional Council account.

Donatus was restrained by his political party two weeks ago from carrying out council duties because of the investigation into the alleged unauthorised spending.

The IPC issued a statement this morning indicating that the leadership is still gathering comprehensive details surrounding Donatus' arrest.

In the statement, the party said the situation will be monitored closely to ensure that his constitutional rights are fully protected throughout the judicial proceedings.

The party called on the public and supporters to remain calm and refrain from speculation while allowing the legal system to run its course.
