A public-private electrification project is transforming the lives of 257 families in the Usab Informal Settlement at Karibib.

Residents in the Usab Informal settlement used to suffer when they had no access to electricity.

Emilia Shaimbilwe is one of the residents who now has access to electricity after years of struggling in the dark.

"I have been here for maybe 30 years; first, when we had no electricity, it was tough; we were not doing business. Now things are easier; we are doing business."

Another resident, Hilde Hamukwaya, expressed similar sentiments, stating that "Things were a bit difficult because using gas is not easy or safe, especially for families with children. Now that we have electricity, at least things are going smoothly; we have TVs, we have fridges, and now we can drink cold water."

Navachab Gold Mine, Erongo Red, Karibib Town Council and the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy pumped in millions of dollars to electrify the 257 houses in Usab.

Navachab Gold Mine Managing Director George Botshiwe described the importance of the project, saying, "We are not just lighting houses; we are empowering families, unlocking economic opportunities and helping pave the way for the future."

The Chief Executive Officer of Erongo RED, Tino !Hanabeb said, "For the past two years, between ourselves, together with the ministry and Navachab, we have spent N$24 million just for electrification in Karibib, the highest in the region, but the need still remains. So we will still work with Navachab to be able to partner."

The Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy hailed the public-private partnership and reiterated the government's support to accelerate the electrification of every house in the country.

Natangue Ithete said the project is part of the Sixth National Development Plan, where the government is targeting 70% access to electricity by 2030.

"We stand ready to continue supporting local authorities. This region is endowed with an abundance of natural resources; thus, electrification of houses, schools and public institutions in Karibib should be easy and effortless. Every mine, factory or fishing company operating in the Erongo Region ought to contribute to improved livelihood and well-being of the people."

An agreement to extend the partnership was signed, paving the way for other residential areas at Karibib, Usakos, Henties Bay and Swakopmund to have access to electricity.
