Members of Parliament commended the Minister of Finance, Ericah Shifudah, for the progress made in the first two quarters of the 2025/2026 financial year during the debate of the Mid-term Budget review.

The MPs also supported the ministry's decision to reallocate funds to priority areas such as free tertiary education and employment opportunities for teachers and medical personnel.

Swapo Party MP Willem Amutenya praised the government’s decisive funding adjustments aimed at recruiting more teachers and health professionals. He described it as a “timely and welcome intervention”, highlighting the ongoing issues of overcrowded classrooms and critically understaffed hospitals across the nation.

Swapo MP Fenny Tutjavi emphasised the impact on youth, noting that the remaining $159 million—about 19% of the budget allocation—was dedicated to recruiting approximately 665 teachers. She framed this as a significant step in addressing challenges in the teaching profession and tackling unemployment among Namibian citizens.

Meanwhile, IPC MP Lilian Lutuhezi sought clarity on the rollout and administration of free tertiary education. She called for a full costing and implementation plan, including a sustainable financing strategy beyond March 2026. Lutuhezi also urged that teacher recruitment be prioritised for the most overcrowded schools, particularly in rural and marginalised communities. She warned against budget cuts on essential non-personnel costs such as textbooks, infrastructure, and learning materials.
