As the festive season approaches, Police Head of Traffic Law Enforcement Directorate, Commissioner Petrus Swartz, has urged road users to prioritise safety following a fatal accident on the Western Bypass this afternoon.

The crash claimed the life of a driver and left 3 passengers seriously injured. The police report that 4 occupants were travelling in a single-cab bakkie loaded with bricks when the driver lost control after a tyre burst.

The vehicle overturned, killing the driver instantly, while the 3 passengers were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The Police Head of the Traffic Law Enforcement Directorate stressed the importance of vehicle inspection, including roadworthiness, not only now, but also as the festive season approaches.

Police Head of Traffic Law Enforcement Directorate, Commissioner Petrus Swartz

"I would like to urge all road users to prioritise safety on every journey. Road safety is not the responsibility of one. It is a shared commitment that begins with each one of us. I would love to just point out a few things. Number one, ensure that your vehicle is always roadworthy before setting off. Check your tyres, check your brakes, your lights and all the fluid levels. A well-maintained vehicle is always your first line of defence against crashes. Number two, respect the rules of the road, always obey the speed limits, avoid distractions and never drive, never, never ever drive under the influence. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike must remain vigilant and cautious. Number three, plan your trips properly and always rest well during your trips. Fatigue and rushed decisions are very, very dangerous. Schedule breaks, share driving duties and always allow extra time for travel."
