Two more people have died of cholera in Zambia, while 21 remain admitted to hospital as the disease has continued to spread to other parts of the country.

This brings the total number of deaths to five since the disease broke out in August.

According to the latest update from the Zambia National Public Health Institute, the country has cumulatively recorded 478 cases in just two months.

The epicentre of Mpulungu district in the Northern Province is battling with 295 cases, while its neighbouring towns of Nsama and Mbala have 131 and 17, respectively.

Another town in the Copperbelt Province called Masaiti has sharply recorded 18 new cases in just 48 hours of the outbreak.

The provincial capital of the same province has recorded a new case, while neighbour Kitwe has a similar situation.

Others are Mpika in Muchinga Province with nine cases, while Nsenga Hill has five, with Kaputa having a case.

The government has intensified measures to curb the spread.

They include sensitisation of communities alongside vaccinations in disease-prone areas.

So far, 225,858 people have been vaccinated against cholera.

Further, community members are being trained as volunteers to support health workers in the fight to stop the spread of this deadly diarrhoeal disease.
