The ||Kharas Regional Resettlement Committee Chairperson, Dawid Gertze, said the Land Reform Advisory Commission's final authority on resettlement farm allocations undermines the informed decisions of regional committees.
Gertze, who doubles as regional governor, made the remarks during the opening session of the regional resettlement committee meeting on Thursday.
He suggested that regional governors should be included in the final decision-making on farm allocations to represent and defend the interests of the people they serve.
"My concern is not regionalism, but reality. How can we balance our allocations to address the critical needs of our farmers in ||Kharas, while still taking cognisance of the broader national framework? And what becomes of the long list of rejected and dejected farmers, whose applications gather dust while new ones are treated as if no backlog exists?"
The governor also pointed out that the committee meeting surpasses routine activities.
"It is to begin a crucial conversation. We have a collective responsibility to look beyond the immediate task and ask the difficult questions: Are our policies truly fit for purpose? Can we innovate? Can we do better?"
The governor said grassroots individuals have lost hope in the resettlement process, feeling overlooked in the allocation decision.
The regional resettlement committees recommend allocation of a resettlement farm to the Land Reform Advisory Commission.
