The High Commission of Zambia on Saturday celebrated its Independence Day anniversary.
Zambia and Namibia have a deep relationship spanning many decades, rooted in solidarity and diplomatic relations as well as infrastructure and economic development.
Zambia achieved its independence on 24 October 1964 when it regained power over the nation, which had been colonised by the British since the late 1800s.
Since gaining its independence, Zambia has played a significant role in supporting other southern African countries in their fight against imperialism and oppression by providing bases, offices and training camps.
Zambia's High Commissioner to Namibia, Stephen Katuka, reflected on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters whose courage, unity, and faith gave birth to a sovereign nation anchored on peace and equality, which he says has been Zambia's enduring foundation over the past six decades.
"As we may all be aware, Zambia's relationship with Namibia is rooted in history, strengthened by shared values and a common destiny. It dates to the pre-independence period, during which time Zambia provided a sanctuary to our Namibian brothers and sisters during the liberation struggle. Our two nations have continued with friendship built on trust, cooperation and mutual respect."
The Minister of International Relations and Trade, Selma Ashipala-Musyavi, in a speech read on her behalf, said Zambia's journey since 1964 stands as a remarkable testament to the strength of unity, peace and visionary leadership.
"The country's unwavering commitment to democratic values, regional stability and social progress continues to inspire not only Namibians but also the southern African region. Your Excellency, Namibia treasures the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity that unite our two sister republics. These bonds were formed in the trenches of the liberation struggle and deepened through the decades of cooperation in the spirit of brotherliness and pan-Africanism."
She further stated that Namibia stands together with Zambia as they celebrate their 61st independence, honouring the endurance, sacrifices, and collective spirit of the Zambian people.
