Despite one or two minor operational issues, voting in the 2025 Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections went well in all 120 constituencies and 59 local authorities.

Updating the nation this afternoon, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Dr. Elsie Nghikembua, said countrywide reports indicate that the process is proceeding smoothly in all areas.

Voting started at all polling stations around the country and will continue until nine o'clock tonight.

Eligible voters appeared eager to make their mark, as long queues were observed at many polling stations as early as four o'clock.

"Voter turnout has thus far been encouraging, with many citizens arriving early to cast their votes. I am pleased to note that the measures we have implemented to ensure efficiency and accessibility at polling places for all voters, particularly persons with disabilities and the elderly, are in effect, allowing every Namibian to participate fully," she explained.

The electoral management body says it has established strict protocols to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Political party and candidate agents are present at various polling stations to observe and monitor the polling process.

"Accredited observers from various organisations are also present at polling stations to observe proceedings and ensure transparency," welcoming their presence as it "reinforces the credibility of the electoral system."

When asked about an incident at a polling station in the hotly contested Katutura Central Constituency, where political party posters and other campaign material had to be removed, Dr Nghikembua had this to say.

"The electoral act is very clear; that is a violation of the electoral law. However, we would like to point out that we have not received that report, and once we receive that report, we will act."

With regard to the voter participation and expectations of an increased voter outcome compared to the 2020 elections, the ECN chairperson told the media that the electoral management body hopes for an increased voter turnout.

"In 2020, 38% was very low, and we really hope that it is going to be better this time around; that is why we are using this opportunity as a commission to encourage them to go out and vote in their numbers in their constituencies."

The first results of the 2025 Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections are expected to be announced during the course of Thursday.
