A new community-led garden in Okakarara is sowing seeds of hope as residents take action to fight hunger and create employment in the town.
The project, driven by community members John Viakondo and Hitjevi Katjangue, is a partnership with the Okakarara Town Council, which has made four hectares of fully fenced land available and equipped it with two water tanks to support production.
Planting began with cabbage, onions, carrots and a variety of seasonal vegetables.
Beyond improving food security, the garden is expected to generate income for its upkeep and contribute to youth and women empowerment initiatives, while uplifting previously disadvantaged groups.
Viakondo elaborated, "There are people living with HIV that need these vegetables. That's why we started a small community garden where we incorporate them doing this work in the garden just to help them and to help those vulnerable kids that are asking or begging at the shop."
Viakondo has urged all stakeholders to join hands and support the project to ensure its sustainability and long-term impact on the community.
