Grootfontein Municipality has undertaken a groundbreaking ceremony to implement electricity services at Omulunga Extension 7.
Once completed, the electrification project will benefit about 400 houses in the area.

Speaking at the event, Grootfontein mayor Moritz Gaingob says the project represents the council's commitment to improve basic service delivery and enhance the quality of life of residents.

"Access to electricity brings safety, dignity, and opportunities for social and economic development. I wish to emphasise that Council expects projects of this nature to prioritise the employment of local community members. Such contracts must contribute to reducing unemployment by creating job opportunities and skills transfer for residents within the project area. "

The project, valued at N$17 million, is scheduled for 12 months.
Project Engineer at Grootfontein Municipality Ananias Nakale and contractor Trovic Shavuka of NBT Quality Services also spoke at the ceremony.

"These ervens are already partially serviced with water and sewer infrastructure. This is a testimony to the Grootfontein municipality council that they have made their commitment to deliver services."

"We would like to thank the municipality of Grootfontein for this opportunity, and we are here to deliver quality work, as our name says, NBT Quality Services. We would like to work together with the community very well and to do the skills transfer that we have and transfer it to the community, and we got 12 months, but we want to do this project within 6 months if possible."

The location is part of the council's informal settlement upgrading programme.
