The 7th National Council conducted a special session and orientation seminar for the newly elected members of the 7th National Council following the Regional Councils and local authorities elections of last year.
The induction programme commenced today and will run until Friday.
The induction is intended to equip members with the necessary knowledge and skills required to effectively fulfil their legislative, oversight and representative mandate.
During his welcoming remarks to the new members, Chairperson of the National Council Lukas Muha reminded members of their role, which goes beyond legislative review.
"We are entrusted with the sacred duties of oversight by holding the executive accountable. And this mandate derives again from the Constitution, Article 41. Also scrutinise the implementations of our policies and programmes and ensure that public resources are managed transparently and efficiently. Through our standing committees, outreach missions and stakeholders' engagement, we bridge the gap between the central government and the region of the regions and also amplify the voices of the constituents and safeguard the interests of all Namibians."
Vice-Chairperson of the National Council, Emma Muteka, encouraged members that the induction signifies more than a title. She said it rather signifies the importance of service delivery, responsibility and national duty.
"Each of us must join or have joined this House of Parliament at a time when principled leadership, collaboration and foresight are essential for the progress of our nation. This induction provides us with an opportunity to align our vision, deepen our understanding of our constitutional role and recommit ourselves to serving the people with integrity, diligence and purpose. Together, we must ensure that this House of Review remains a strong pillar of democracy, responsive to aspirations of our citizens and guided by the values of accountability and unity."
During the induction, members will constitute 6 parliamentary standing committees and 5 inter-parliamentary organisation committees.
