Seasonal floods have severely affected Nankuntwe Combined School, making it only accessible by boat. The school faces possible closure after parents refused to allow its relocation, citing past experiences of property loss.
School board chairperson Sanzila Shamwazi stated that the school boundaries were meant to be elevated in 2000 to prevent flooding, following a suggestion from the then Minister of Basic Education, John Mutorwa. However, this commitment has yet to be fulfilled.
Teachers also echoed that the floods challenge the teaching and learning process, with the school grounds totally flooded, causing crocodiles, hippos, and snakes to frequent the area.
Albert Lubanda, a teacher at the school, noted that he hopes for the embankment process to be accelerated, adding that the school's septic tank also needs rehabilitation.
Simasiku Liswani, the Induna of Nankuntwe, complained that no government officials, from the constituency councillor to school inspectors, have come to assess how people are living.
