The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has officially inaugurated the National Road Safety Council Board.
The Board is tasked with coordinating interventions aimed at reducing road crashes, injuries and fatalities in Namibia.
According to the ministry, Namibia recorded 2,793 road crashes and 431 fatalities between January 2025 and November 2025. Injuries recorded numbered 4,565.
Nekundi said the new board will play a central role in reversing the alarming statistics and emphasising the need for strict adherence to road safety directives.
"I further urge the Board to familiarise itself fully with these statutory obligations and to discharge its duties in strict compliance with the Act and other applicable governance frameworks. In accordance with the Road Safety Campaign and Statistics Report for the 2025-2026 First Division, the campaign ran proactively in collaboration with the National Road Safety Council, NAMPOL, MVA and other relevant and significant stakeholders. During this campaign, the National Road Safety Council supported a pilot initiative for the use of dash cameras in emergency and road and traffic law enforcement vehicles. And the use of reflectors on domestic animals."
Eight board members will serve a five-year term, effective from the 1st of February.
Retired Deputy Commissioner Amalia Gawa!nas, who comes with 27 years of experience, is the chairperson deputised by Matheus Muenjo.
Other members are Jonas Sheelongo EX-Officio, Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo EX-Officio, Audrin Mathe EX-Officio, Frieda Shimakeleni member, Anna Libana member, and Rector Mutelo member.
Gawa!nas said road carnage needs a new approach.
Nekundi expects the council to strengthen road safety governance and improve coordination among key stakeholders to enhance safety on Namibian roads.
