Namibia's higher education sector has gained continental recognition after the University of Namibia (UNAM) secured 31st place in the first-ever Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Quacquarelli Symonds is a global organisation that assesses universities based on reputation, research, teaching quality, and international collaboration.

It reviewed more than 1,000 institutions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Of these, 260 met the eligibility requirements, and only 69 universities from 21 countries were ranked.

UNAM's position marks its debut in any QS ranking and highlights Namibia on the continental higher-education map.

Vice-Chancellor Kenneth Matengu said the ranking reflects the university's growing academic reputation and relevance in Africa.

Professor Matengu described it as a significant milestone for both the institution and the country.

UNAM is also ranked 13th in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, further confirming its rising profile in the region.
