The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, has ordered airlines operating in Namibia to review what he describes as exorbitant ticket prices.
The Minister made the remarks during Aviation Week Africa 2026, underway in Windhoek.
With fares for return flights to domestic destinations and neighbouring countries soaring, Nekundi gave airlines six months to adjust prices or face regulatory intervention.
"Two weeks ago, I saw a return ticket to Ondangwa, in Namibia, for over N$9,000. Something must be crazy. Ondangwa over N$9000. The cost to Cape Town may be around half of that amount. Something must be wrong. The figure is not correct. Not correct. You must reduce that price."
He warned that if airlines do not comply, the ministry may have no choice but to impose regulations similar to those governing the taxi industry.
