The Anti-Corruption Commission's deputy director general says corruption weakens public institutions and negatively affects economic growth and development of any nation.

Those entrusted with the management of public funds and other assets, Erna Van Der Merwe says should stop abusing public office for personal gratification.

Van der Merwe made the remarks at ACC's consultative workshop on the development of the Third National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan for 2026-2030 at Oshakati.

The workshop aimed to consult residents of the Oshana region to provide their input on corruption-related issues of public concern, which they wish to see addressed in the Third National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan.

The consultations have been necessitated by the current strategy that is expiring end of May.

"The institutions, including the ACC, are established to serve national interests. Therefore, you should contribute and provide inputs that may shape a well-designed strategy and action plan for the next 5-year team. In this manner, you will proudly take ownership of this strategy and action plan as proud citizens of Namibia." Erna Van Der Merwe said

Van der Merwe said public contributions to the third strategy would enable citizens to take ownership of it and strengthen accountability in the fight against corruption.

She added that citizens have the right to speak out and criticise officials and institutions that fail to introduce anti-corruption measures that meet public expectations.

Van der Merwe further stressed that fighting corruption and promoting ethical values is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of all.

Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge said corruption contributes to underdevelopment, destabilises peace, widens the gap between the rich and the poor and deepens inequality.

" As leaders and citizens, we must therefore understand that corruption is not only about money changing hands illegally. Corruption is any abuse of entrusted power for personal benefit. If It is found wherever honesty, accountability, fairness and professionalism are compromised."
