The budget allocation of N$134 million towards the National Council (NC) has been approved for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Despite the approval, MPs stated that the budget is not adequate considering the oversight and outreach efforts carried out by the institution.
"A very important aspect of this regional council, especially the oversight, if not the sessions that we are then compromising because of the allocation, because with this allocation they also have administrative duties that need to happen. 'We all understand the rise in the DSA rates, and then we are also challenged in that regard,' contributed Okahandja Constituency councillor Bethuel Tjaveondja.
George Garab, councillor for Otavi Constituency, asked, "How can Honourable Members adequately consult communities across all 14 regions if constituency outreach remains underfunded? How can the council strengthen legislative efforts that remain underfunded? How can the council strengthen the greater scrutiny without sufficient investment in research, policy analysis, technical transformation and translation services?"
