Veteran sports journalist Limba Mupetami has been recognized for her work in sports journalism, earning another nomination at the RASA Awards.

Mupetami has worked in sports journalism for several years, covering major events locally and internationally.

In 2018, she won Sports Journalist of the Year at the Namibia Annual Sports Awards, before later claiming both the Digital and Broadcasting Sports Journalist of the Year awards in 2021.

She added another award in 2024 after winning Print Sports Journalist of the Year, strengthening her position among the country's sports reporters.

Her reporting highlights Namibian athletes across different sporting codes, contributing to her latest RASA nomination.

She says the nomination motivates her.

"It's a motivating experience. I guess it means that consistency pays off, the long hours pay off. I don't think it's just for myself, but for other journalists as well, not just sports journalists, but everyone in general."

Looking back on her career, she has covered some of the country's biggest sporting events, which she describes as milestones.

"A lot of milestones. Sports is a vast portfolio. We cover many things, not just tournaments. It's rugby events, the men's Premier League, the women's Super League. Every coverage, the energy I put in, I would say, is a milestone."

She notes that the industry has challenges, including tight deadlines and limited resources.

"We have limited resources. The sports portfolio is large, week in, week out. I would like to be everywhere and run a sports desk with more capacity, but we don't have it. Not many young people or women enter the industry, and when they do, are we training them adequately? We need to give them space to be themselves."

Despite these challenges, she focuses on storytelling and how her work contributes to sports journalism in Namibia.

"We shaped the industry so that journalists can speak about issues, whether malpractices in administration or lack of sports facilities. Can we do better? Yes. We can mentor people who will take over and do more."

With her fourth RASA nomination, Limba Mupetami continues to be one of Namibia's most consistent sports journalists, whose work has influenced local sports coverage.
