Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Dr Sanet Steenkamp says the 1904–1908 War of Resistance remains one of the most defining chapters in Namibia's history.
Delivering the keynote address at Oluno in Ondangwa, Oshana Region, during the Genocide Remembrance Day commemoration, Dr Steenkamp said Namibians continue to honour the bravery and sacrifices of the country's forebears and resistance leaders, including Samuel Maharero, Hendrik Witbooi, Cornelius Frederick, Jacob Morenga, Mandume ya Ndemufayo, Nehale lya Mpingana and many others.
She said Genocide Remembrance Day serves as a moment for Namibians to reflect on the past while accepting responsibility for the future.
Dr Steenkamp noted that the day should strengthen the nation's commitment to justice, reconciliation and national unity. She further said the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama people was not only an attack on specific communities but also an assault on human dignity itself.
According to the minister, the impact of the genocide continues to be felt across generations. Despite the immense suffering endured, the affected communities have preserved their identity, culture, and hope.
