The final results within the |Khomas Region show that members of the |Khomanin community voted in favour of removing Chief Juliane Gawa!nas through a vote of no confidence, with 889 votes supporting the motion and 87 opposing it.

The results were presented by independent election observer Nelson Hausiku, who described the process as fair and transparent.

A total of 986 votes were cast. Of these, 889 were in favour of removing the chief, 87 were against and 11 were spoilt.

The vote was conducted across four areas. Windhoek at Auas Primary School recorded 634 votes in favour, 69 against and four spoilt ballots. Windhoek Rural recorded 139 votes in favour, 12 against and five spoilt ballots.

≠Goas recorded 47 votes in favour, two against and one spoilt ballot. Baumgartsbrunn recorded 69 votes in favour, three against and one spoilt ballot.

The steering committee said the process is guided by the |Khomani Traditional Community customary law clause 4.2.5(b).

The clause states that the position of chief is generally held for life, but it provides for the removal of a chief from office by the traditional authority.

Community leader Immanuel! Aochamub emphasised the traditional act.

"The Traditional Authority Act states, 'If there is sufficient reason to warrant the removal of a chief or head of a traditional community from office, such chief or head may be removed from office by the members of his or her traditional community in accordance with the customary law of that community.'"

!Aochamub said all members of the steering committee and police were present during the process.

Social activist Shaun Gariseb said they did the process by the book.

"There's nothing that prohibits us from undertaking this process as it was explained in Section 8.1. The community can convene, have meetings, and organise themselves. So when we did that, they started having a problem. If somebody is having a problem with you as a leader, what do you do, especially in a space like this?"

Walter |Haseb, the special advisor to the  ≠Goas stressed that his stance remains unchanged: that the decision to oust Chief Gawa!Nas was illegal.

The committee said that the next step is submitting the findings to the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa.

Sorris Sorris in the Kunene region, Otjimbingwe, Tubusis, Groot Aub, Dordabis, the ≠Nossob farming areas and Stinkwater were allowed to submit written petitions because of logistical constraints.
