Landless People's Movement Member of Parliament Dawid Eigub says that local authorities are facing a significant challenge in generating revenue due to a longstanding accumulation of debt and deteriorating infrastructure.

He says another contributing factor is service providers such as telecommunication companies not paying local authorities for the use of land.

Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele says according to the Local Authority Act, local authorities are required to collect revenue to set up annual tariffs regulating the collection of revenue.

However, they should also be aware of the high levels of poverty in some areas and develop initiatives to assist those unable to afford normal rates and services.

"In the process of implementing municipal revenue collection methods, policies and regulations, local authorities have to take cognisance of their high levels of poverty, which are prevalent in various areas of their jurisdictions, and have to develop various initiatives to assist those customers who are economically unable to meet normal rates and service charges."

IPC MP, Armas Amukoto also questioned the minister why the report on the boundary delimitation and demarcation is not being shared with the public, further questioning the cost of the activity.

The deputy minister says the report is not being withheld and will be released at an appropriate time.
