The UNAM Darts League continues to bring together corporate institutions and state-owned enterprises through competition, networking, and social engagement, while also helping participants prepare for high-profile events such as the State-Owned Enterprises Games.
The latest round of fixtures took place over the weekend in Windhoek, with teams from various organisations competing as the league enters its third season. Currently in its third edition, the tournament features teams representing corporate entities and state-owned enterprises from across the country. Organisers say the competition not only promotes the sport of darts but also creates a vital platform for collaboration and interaction among participating institutions.
Acting Darts Administrator Benjamin Manetti outlined the entry requirements and format of the growing league. Manetti explained that UNAM initiated the league to bridge corporate companies and SOEs. To join, organisations must form an internal team with a minimum of five players. However, larger squads are encouraged to allow for rotation due to the busy schedule, which typically features fixtures on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.
Manetti added that the social aspect of the league remains one of its core strengths, allowing participants to build meaningful relationships while staying competitive. Manetti noted that the beauty of darts lies in its ability to bring different companies together to socialise beyond their own workplaces. He emphasised that while the environment is competitive, it ultimately focuses on fun and is open to any organisation looking to unite Namibians through sport.
Participants from various institutions echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the tournament strengthens workplace relationships, simplifies professional communication, and sharpens their skills for national corporate tournaments.
Dr Moses Waiganjo from NUST highlighted darts as an essential sport that deserves greater priority. He explained that when entities gather, it provides an invaluable networking opportunity where professionals who usually interact only via email can finally meet, bond, and build relationships that ultimately improve professional collaboration and teamwork. Representing the Roads Authority, Benno Jossop stated that their team is formally registered by the company to compete in the year-long league. He emphasised that their continuous participation serves as crucial preparation to ensure they are competitive ahead of the darts discipline at the upcoming SOE Games.
The Namibia Broadcasting Corporation's darts team is equally utilizing the league fixtures to fine-tune their tactics and build momentum for the major events on the corporate sporting calendar. Ukumbuavi Muatjetjeja from the NBC team expressed strong determination, noting that while sports involve winning and losing, the squad is aiming for ultimate victory this year. He shared that the team has been training intensely during lunch hours at their headquarters to study opponent strategies, adding that they are confident and fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
As the season progresses, organisers hope the league will continue to attract more corporate participants, contributing to the growth of darts while strengthening institutional ties across Namibia.
