Omuthiya Constituency Councillor Erastus Nekomba has called on nurses to love their work, saying nursing is a calling and not just a job.
Nekomba paid a visit to Omuthiya District Hospital and Omuthiya Health Care Centre to familiarise himself with their operations.
Nekomba commended health practitioners for what he described as good service delivery during the visit.
He said the purpose of the visit was to engage directly with both patients and health care practitioners about the challenges and progress at the facilities.
"My main purpose was just to ensure that I know what is happening around here since it falls under my constituency, just to hear from the patients, the type of service rendered and the attitude of the nurses. I have given them words of encouragement to say nursing is not a job; it is a calling. Whoever undertakes it should not take it for money-making but rather to serve the nation with commitment and put it at heart."
Nekomba expressed that the visit met his expectations. "At the clinic where we concluded our visit, it was encouraging to see that the patients were being attended to by the time we arrived. The few patients we encountered were nearing the end of their treatment, allowing them to return home early. I am pleased with the level of care provided to the patients and the hygiene standards, which have resulted in a positive experience for everyone."
The councillor also donated fruits and winter beanies to patients.
One of the patients, Maria Haufiku, expressed her appreciation for the councillor's efforts to understand the conditions at the clinic. "We are grateful for his visit; I wish all the councillors would follow his example. He should encourage them to expedite the process so that we do not have to wait as long."
