Twelve Namibian medical specialists are on an exchange programme to China's Jiangsu Province.

The team will participate in the Observational Fellowship Programme and will undergo training at the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from 03 August to 01 September.

The training is implemented under a Memorandum of Understanding on health coordination between the Khomas Regional Council and the Health Commission of Jiangsu Province.

The programme forms part of a longstanding partnership between the two regions, which has expanded since 2015 to include corporations in health, science and technology and education, trade, agriculture, tourism and human resource management.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Khomas Region Governor Sam Nujoma stated that the fellowship will provide the medical specialists with an opportunity to gain exposure to advanced medical practices and strengthen their clinical skills.

"I trust that this fellowship will further strengthen the specialist exchange programme, the Foundation, and the implementation of our Memorandum of Understanding. I am confident that it will lay the groundwork for additional training, capacity building, and the continued development of our health institutions."

Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping explained.

"This programme will play an important role in promoting exchanges and cooperation between our two countries in the area of health care and in advancing the development of the health sector in the region. Ladies and gentlemen, health care and people-to-people exchanges have always been priority areas of cooperation between China and [the partner country."

On behalf of the specialists, Dr Juanita !Naobeb commended the Khomas Regional Council and China for the opportunity.

The delegation includes specialists in fields such as oncology, radiology, and nuclear medicine, among others.
