The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has officially installed Professor Frednard Gideon as its third substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the institution and the formal transfer of leadership.
Professor Frednard Gideon was officially robed and took the oath of office as NUST's third substantive Vice-Chancellor.
He brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education and previously served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Namibia.
An accomplished academic, he holds a PhD in applied mathematics and an MBA.
In his inaugural speech, Gideon vouched for his leadership and will focus on academic excellence and strengthening NUST's contribution to national development.
"As a Vice Chancellor, I will work tirelessly to ensure that we have an integrated strategic plan to become a living government. Guiding every decision, every resource we have to allocate, every partnership we have to establish, and every outcome we pursue. So my responsibility is not simply to manage the university. My responsibility is to implement it at the university."
The formal transition was completed when former Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Niikondo handed over the university's instruments of power.
"We give a cheer here today to Mark, another important moment in the history of this institution. Our new substantive Vice Chancellor Professor Frednard Gideon. It is my honour to hand over the instrument of power as he assumes the responsibilities of this office."
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Sports, Arts and Culture Dino Ballotti described the installation as an important milestone for Namibia's higher education sector.
He said universities remain key drivers of innovation, research and economic development.
"And it is why the appointment of a vice chancellor is of such profound national importance. Professor, your appointment marks an opportunity to shape the future of higher education, innovation, and national development."
The Chancellor of NUST, Professor Peter Katjavivi, said Gideon takes over at a critical time as the university continues to expand its research, innovation and international partnerships.
"Professor Gideon, as a Vice Chancellor you occupy a unique position. You are interested in leading NUST by providing its strategic direction. In many respects it is your responsibility to ensure that the institution strikes and shines. We have every confidence that under your leadership, NUST will continue to grow from strength to strength and deepen its academic excellence."
Professor Gideon now assumes responsibility for steering NUST's strategic direction as the university seeks to strengthen its position as a leading institution for science, technology and innovation in the region and worldwide.
