Community members of Sangwali and surrounding areas in the Judea Lyaboloma Constituency in the Zambezi Region. will have access to radio services within the next three to six months.

This follows budget provisions made by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) to purchase the necessary transmission equipment.

ICT Minister Emma Theofelus made the announcement during a courtesy visit to Shikati of the Mayeyi People, Boniface Shufu.

Theofelus said the assessments conducted by the Ministry identified connectivity challenges in the area, with the expansion of radio network coverage now a priority.

MTC towers are already available in the area; however, they are not equipped with NBC transmitters to provide radio and television services.

Theofelus explained.

“Therefore, we have identified this as an immediate priority in our budget for this year. We will procure the necessary radio-frequency equipment so that the area can benefit from NBC Radio. Hopefully, within the next three to six months, this problem will be a thing of the past.”

Theofelus highlighted that the Ministry will continue conducting assessments across the country as part of its mandate to expand ICT services and improve access to communication services in communities.

Shikati of the Mayeyi Traditional Authority, Boniface Shufu, thanked the Minister for responding to the community's concerns.

Shufu noted that the lack of network connectivity was among the issues raised during the recently held Batsara Cultural Festival, which celebrates Mayeyi culture and community.

“Thank you for coming here and sharing this news with me. I’m grateful that we are working together. The tower has been here for such a long time, but it still isn’t connected to the radio station.”

Once installed, community members in the areas will have access to improved information and communication services.
