The Witbooi Legacy Project has been launched in Gibeon on Saturday, bringing together descendants of the late Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi, community members and various stakeholders to honour the family's historical legacy.
The historic town was the setting for the event, bringing together members of the Witbooi family, elders, descendants, community members and invited guests.
Deputy Minister of Education Dino Ballotti reflected on the historical circumstances with the late Witbooi.
“His life was characterised by extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, and he had an unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity. He also had an unshakeable dedication to the welfare and the future of his community. He was born into a respected Nama leadership family, where Captain Witbooi emerged as a unifying figure whose leadership transcended tribal boundaries and inspired a broader vision of unity and nationhood.”
Ballotti also acknowledged the contribution and legacy of Reverend Markus Witbooi and his wife, Lea Witbooi.
Descendant of the late, Petra Peterson explained.
“Gibeon is not merely a geographical location. It is a place of resilience and inspiration. It is a place where generations before us walked, served, sacrificed, and laid the foundations upon which we continue to build today. It is therefore fitting that this important initiative is launched here, in the heart of Gibeon, a place that carries the footprints of great leaders and where the legacy of the late Captain Hendrik Witbooi, Oupa !Nanseb, as well as the late Reverend Marcus Witbooi, and other distinguished leaders continues to inspire generations.”
Founder of the Witbooi Legacy Project, Olga Witbooi, said the initiative is founded on the belief that heritage should be viewed as a responsibility rather than simply something to remember.
“For many years, the legacy of the late Captain Hendrik Witbooi, one of Namibia's most respected historical figures, has continued to inspire generations through his courage, leadership, faith, and commitment to his people. His life represented much more than resistance and leadership.”
Among the key highlights of the event was the presentation and public viewing of a whip and a replica Bible associated with the legacy of the late Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi.
The community outreach further included assistance through the Witbooi Children's Initiative, with beneficiaries receiving items such as food parcels, warm clothing and blankets, as well as toiletries for school-going children.
