Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema remains in the lead in the 49 out of 226 constituencies announced so far, as the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) continues announcing results of Zambia's Thursday elections.

The midnight announcements have increased to about 21% of the total results, with the commission pledging to announce more in three phases on Sunday.

In the 49 constituencies announced so far, Hichilema of the ruling United Party for National Development UPND has continued to be in the lead with 87,427 more votes.

He has so far polled 438,708.

His closest rival, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Progress (NRPUP), is trailing with 351,281.

The results received and announced so far are predominantly rural votes.
Today's announcement may determine who among the main contenders is headed for victory.
