The implementation of the Financial Institutions and Markets Act, FIMA, has brought changes to Namibia's financial regulatory framework, including the regulation of medical aid funds.
The Namibia Health Plan, NHP, held a media engagement to clarify the implications of FIMA and address concerns about members' benefits, contributions, and access to healthcare.
FIMA officially came into effect on 1 May 2026, with regulations covering medical aid funds forming part of the new framework.
NHP Principal Officer Dantago Garosas says FIMA is intended to strengthen accountability, transparency, member protection, and confidence across the financial services sector.
She assured NHP members that the implementation of FIMA does not mean an immediate change to their medical aid cover, with members continuing to access healthcare in line with their existing benefit options and fund rules.
NHP has also established a dedicated FIMA information hub to provide members with official updates, educational material, and guidance on the implementation process.
Garosas said any future changes resulting from amendments to fund rules or annual contributions will be communicated to members separately and in advance.
NHP urged its members to rely on official communication channels and information sessions to avoid misinformation about FIMA and its impact on their medical aid.
The fund is also working towards further FIMA alignment, including requirements relating to the internal assessment of medical aid claims, which NHP says must be implemented by 30 April 2027.
