The Vice President has called for stronger participation of women in advancing the development of the Kunene Region, stating that the theme "Empowering Women for Inclusive Growth and Community Development" reflects the need to ensure that development efforts benefit all communities and leave no one behind.
Vice President Lucia Witbooi delivered this message at the Ondiri Peer Group General Assembly in Ovinyange Village, describing women as pillars of hope and key drivers of national progress.
She says empowering women remains one of the most effective ways to achieve inclusive development, stressing the importance of unity and mentorship among women.
"Women are rewriting the rule of leadership in every sector; I therefore challenge the Ondiri peer group to take the space and be a beacon of hope and courage for young women out there. Let this peer group help advance and champion the rights of women and young girls in this region and beyond; continue to work hard to strengthen this peer group and to strengthen the network of women and think big."
Witbooi acknowledged that women still face challenges such as economic exclusion and inequality but said collective action and community-based solutions can help overcome these barriers. She encouraged women to initiate sustainable projects in sectors such as agriculture and tourism and to actively participate in leadership and decision-making spaces.
"My people, these kinds of platforms where a woman can find strategic partnership, mentorship, honest counselling and unwavering support from one another are truly necessary."
The vice president commended the Ondiri Peer Group for its long-standing contribution to women's empowerment through mentorship, financial assistance, and support to vulnerable members.
Founded in 2002, the group continues to be seen as a beacon of hope in the Kunene region, strengthening communities through unity and support. Inclusive development remains central to the government's agenda, with women expected to play a stronger role in shaping Namibia's future.
