Liberation struggle hero and SWAPO stalwart Tobias Hainyeko is being remembered today at Ohaihana Village in the Ohangwena Region, 59 years after his death in 1967.

Hainyeko’s remains have never been recovered. Last month, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah symbolically erected a grave for him at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek.

Addressing today’s memorial, the President said government would continue efforts to trace Hainyeko’s remains and ensure he receives a dignified burial.

Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba shared personal memories of Hainyeko, recalling their meeting and his farewell before Hainyeko left Zambia for Namibia in May 1967.

Family members and former liberation fighters described Hainyeko as a selfless freedom fighter whose sacrifice contributed to Namibia’s independence.

The memorial, organised by Hainyeko’s family, is being held at the homestead of retired former Police Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa.

First Gentleman Lieutenant General Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah is among the dignitaries attending.
