The National Road Safety Council has allocated N$200 000 to the ||Kharas Regional Road Safety Forum to strengthen coordination and ensure that the road safety programmes deliver results in communities.
The forum was established in 2015 but remained dormant, and it has since been relaunched under the theme "Our roads, our safety and our responsibility".
It seeks to bring stakeholders together to coordinate road safety initiatives and awareness programmes, identify road safety challenges, and find ways to reduce road accidents, injuries, and mortality rates.
"Regional and local levels are vital for success; hence, our resolve to create road safety forums in all 14 regions of the country to assist in coordinating and delivering road safety products to the local communities," said the chairperson of the National Road Safety Council,Amalia !Gawanas .
||Kharas Governor Dawid Gertze has called on the forum to develop strategies with clear priorities and measurable progress.
"Road safety is not only the responsibility of the police or a single institution. It is a shared responsibility involving government and local authorities, law enforcement agencies, transport operations, businesses, schools, families and communities and every individual road user."
Gertze advised the forum to work with road crash data, community experiences and evidence-based factors that put road users at risk to help reduce road crashes.
The ||Kharas Police Commander Marius Katamila is the Chairperson of the Road Safety Forum.
"Our strength will lie in the ability to work together as one team, share information, combine resources and translate our commitments into practical results. The forums should not become a platform for meetings and discussions, it must become a platform for action, accountability and measurable progress."
