Community members have petitioned the Mariental Magistrate's Court and Hardap Regional Police Commander, Sydney Philander, demanding accountability following the murder of Valerie Rooi on 31 October 2026.
The residents are questioning the granting of bail to Jackson Arikumbi, who is accused of Rooi's murder, allegedly committed just ten days after his release on bail in connection with the 2024 murder of Chriszelda Kawari.
The petitions reflect growing community concern over public safety and the handling of serious criminal cases.
The residents are calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Arikumbi's initial bail application, including whether relevant information about the previous murder allegation and potential risks to public safety was adequately presented to the court.
In their petition to Hardap Regional Police Commander Sydney Philander, the community raised concerns about police investigations and communication between investigating officers and prosecutors, amongst others.
"The right to liberty must be respected, but the safety and protection of the innocent members of society must never be treated as an afterthought. Number 3: handling of criminal cases reported to the police. "The community is equally concerned about the manner in which criminal cases and reported complaints are received, investigated, followed up and concluded," read protestors spokesperson Prins Immanuel.
A separate petition to the Mariental Magistrate's Court raises questions about the prosecution's handling of the initial bail application, questioning whether the seriousness of the previous murder allegation was adequately considered.
"If prosecution did not oppose bail, what were the reasons for that decision? Where there are any investigation shortcomings, procedural failures or failures to communicate relevant information that may have affected the outcome of the bail proceedings. We believe that the public deserves transparent explanations of the process followed, subject to the protection of confidentiality, investigative information and the right of the accused."
"Why are they failing us by bailing out the people that are murdering our daughters and our children? While we have people that have slaughtered a goat or sheep, they get no bail, but on the government system, a human being's life is not worth it," questioned late Rooi's family member, Ricardo Rooi.
