Môreson Special School has awarded 15 learners with additional needs at its annual Milestone Moments event, recognising their achievements and transitions into adulthood.

The initiative, established in 2021 as the Môreson Learners Farewell, promotes inclusion, dignity and equal opportunities for learners with intellectual disabilities.

Teacher Coordinator  Janine Cloete  says the  event aims to challenge  societal perceptions  of disability and  encourage greater inclusion.

"It's time that we have the understanding that we have tonight; we do something about that understanding. And that comes with every engagement that we have with people, that we have in the shops, and that we have in the classrooms. When a child is having a little meltdown, ask them what's wrong. It's time that we stop being spectators and know about a special school and know about learners with special needs. It's time that tangible practices have to start taking place."

The Education Minister, Sanet Steenkamp, highlighted the importance of recognising achievements beyond academic performance.

Her message was delivered on her behalf.

"An inclusive society is not just about accommodating differences. It is about celebrating these differences. And this evening is testimony to that. So this evening reminds us that every milestone achieved by a learner is a milestone for a family, a milestone for a school, a milestone for a community, and a milestone for our nation."

Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Lucia Witbooi, emphasised that disability should never diminish an individual's potential.

She was represented by her special advisor at the event.

"To our learners, I wish to say this: you are the valued members of our society. Your achievement matters, your dreams matter, and your contributions matter. Your disability does not diminish your dignity, your humanity or your potential. You deserve to be recognised for your individual abilities, interests, aspirations and accomplishments."

The event brought together families, educators, government representatives and sponsors in support of building a more inclusive society.
