The fear of an outbreak of water-borne diseases is a great concern to teachers and learners at the Max Makushe Senior Secondary School, as the institution is surrounded by sewage water.
The school has thus far recorded several cases among teachers, learners, and administrative and institutional workers.
The school's principal, Godfried Mukata, says the situation has become unbearable as both learners and teachers have endured the flooding of the sewage and the stench it emits for many years.
Mukata attributed the sewage problem to the increased enrolment of learners at the school, saying the current pump station is unable to cope with the current carrying capacity.
He said the school has on numerous occasions reported the problem to the regional education directorate's office and efforts were made to unblock the drain fields, but the problem still persists.
Mukata believes the only permanent solution to the sewage situation at the school is to upgrade the current sewer system.
Approached for comment, Chief Works Inspector in the Ministry of Education, Martin Shapumba, responded that the Max Makushe Senior Secondary School sewage problem will be soon addressed as a contractor has been appointed to replace the pump station and upgrade the current sewer system.
