A historic wooden train carriage was destroyed by fire at the Lüderitz railway station.
TransNamib spokesperson Abigail Raubenheimer confirmed that the train carriage caught fire on Sunday night.
"We can confirm that the coach did burn down about 90% yesterday evening at around eight o'clock. The coach is not currently in use and is usually occupied by homeless children, so the fire might have been started by somebody who tried to make a fire in the coach. The community then informed the fire department, which extinguished the fire," Raubenheimer explained the circumstances.
||Kharas Police Acting Crime Investigations Coordinator, Chief Inspector Billy Kotungondo, told nbc News that the incident is being treated as arson and that police are investigating the matter.
The senior cop declined further comment, saying investigations are still in an infant stage.
