The Electricity Control Board (ECB) wants to activate a power outage reporting mechanism for all stakeholders at Rundu in the Kavango East Region.

The reporting mechanism will ensure that the ECB does not rely on power generators and distributors for scheduled and unplanned outages.

ECB Spokesperson Ferdinand Molale says once the mechanism is activated, residents and businesses can help the regulator monitor the activities of the licensees.

"Ours basically is to try and see whether at the end of our conversation we cannot collaborate in sensitizing one another when these outages take place when they happen and that timely sensitization would enable us, as a regulator, to provide that assistance that would ensure your satisfaction as end users," Molale added.

The ECB said frequent power outages that were experienced in Rundu last year have been addressed after NamPower and NORED upgraded their supply capacity.

But this was disputed by residents in attendance, noting that power outages remain frequent. Some residents claimed to have suffered damage to electrical appliances, for which NORED refused to compensate.

NORED has promised to provide a detailed response to the concerns of the residents regarding power outages and compensation.
