Stock theft, illegal entry into the country, and robberies rank amongst the highest daily crimes committed along the Kunene River.

As a result, residents want a police station at Otjinungua Village in the Epupa Constituency to curtail criminal activities between Namibia and Angola.

Cases of stock theft and illegal entries are said to be heightened due to the absence of gazetted entry points between Namibia and Angola's Namibe and Cunene Provinces.

Gang attacks and robberies are also showing an upward trend in the area.

Kunene Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner Lazarus Johannes, says plans are in the pipeline to set up a fully-fledged police station in the constituency. "Members are available. What is not there is the structure, so it is known and people are preparing it to make sure the structure is available for the members to be there. So, in the areas where we were patrolling, we now have only members who are at Orupembe, and those are the members who are ensuring that security along the border is maintained".

The Epupa Constituency is home to over 20 000 inhabitants, with the majority being the Ovahimba.
