Namibia's Guinness World Record holder for the fastest sand skiing speed is set to attempt to break a second world record.
Henrik May, a resident of Swakopmund, says he will attempt to sand ski in the dunes between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund in one day to motivate Namibians to achieve the impossible.
On May 31st, 2010, May attained the Guinness World Record for the fastest sand skiing speed at 92.12 kilometres per hour and made history.
"This was a world record attempt to show the world I can even ski without snow and to rehabilitate myself from a very bad accident I had a year ago. I had a very bad accident where I fell in the dunes and I broke a lot of bones. It took me about a year to recover, and most people thought 'you'd never ski again in your life', which led me to say no. I want to change the doubters' minds and tell them that anything is possible."
Twelve years have since gone by and May is gearing up for another project which will see him skiing in the towering dunes between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund in a day.
May says he wants his story to motivate others to conquer difficulties.
"Impossible things to see or to do, and this is like a floorboard for younger generations or people not to stop, to complain or get into depression. My message is to never give up on your dreams and thoughts because everyone in the world has a talent that is waiting to be discovered."
When May decided to develop his sand skiing skills, it was difficult to find appropriate clothing for the sport in the market.
But he eventually met Simon Lazarus, a Namibian with disabilities who has a passion for tailoring, to invent what he needed.
May says his 20-year friendship with Lazarus has motivated him to achieve the impossible.
May urges Namibians to use their talents to help others.
